Fiji sounds like palm trees, beaches and small colorful fish. Then suddenly you are sitting underwater at 12 m depth behind a low rock wall while several sharks circle a few meters in front of you.

Before the dive everyone needs certification, and each diver is paired with a guide carrying a metal rod. If a shark comes too close, it is gently pushed away. It sounds reassuring on paper. Underwater it still feels completely unreal.

Most of the dive you stay behind what is basically a small rock fence and watch the sharks move past you in open water. At some moments they are close enough that your instinct says you should not be there.

It really feels like sitting inside an aquarium.

Just without the glass.

And somehow that makes it one of the strangest experiences you can have in Fiji.
